I got another unicorn! Heh. I consider it literary because it can refer to Harry Potter and to The Last Unicorn, both of which I love. Plus, there are other personal reasons.

Darkness at Noon, Arthur Koestler [May. 14th, 2008|05:22 am]

literaryquotes

[rubashov]
"Forgive my pompousness," he went on, "but do you really believe the people are still behind you? It bears you, dumb and resigned, as it bears others in other countries, but there is no response in its depths. The masses have become deaf and dumb again, the great silent x of history, indifferent as the sea carrying the ships. Every passing light is reflected onto its surface, but underneath is darkness and silence. A long time ago we stirred up the depths, but that is over. In other words" -- he paused and put on his pince-nez -- "in those days we made history; now you make politics. That's the whole difference.""

Placement question [May. 13th, 2008|05:02 pm]

literarytattoos

[x_shh]
So I already have two sorta literary tattoos. Although the inspiration came from a book (Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler), its definitely been tweaked to what I believe in.

That said, the next tattoo I want to get is more musical in nature, but I'm looking for some help and I figured people here would appreciate it. My older brother had a daughter 6 weeks ago. She's my first niece and I absolutely adore her. I want to get something both to signify my brother and I, and his beautiful little girl. When I was 16, he gave me a CD with the Michael Franti song "It's Never Too Late".
My favorite line from the song is "And don't fear the nighttime...because the monsters know that you're divine." I want to get the ending part of the line, along with my niece's name (Nina Lee) and a small drawing of a baby monster. My only problem is where to put it. My arms are pretty off limits, because I have a sleeve being drawn up.

Any suggestions?
Also, any font suggestions? I haven't picked one yet.

Placement Question [May. 13th, 2008|03:36 pm]

[nomads_quill]
I have been fighting a fairly decent psychological Dx for most all of my life. Truth be told, I've done a kick-ass job. But, no lie, each and every day is a struggle and requires a good bit of my energy.

Having said that, what I'd like to get is a lyric from a Patti Griffin song, "I'm no fighter, but I'm fighting." The whole song is pertinent but that lyric especially.

Font will likely be Times New Roman, because it looks so good on skin. But I've a few others I'm considering.

My question is body placement. I'm not worried about covering it up, so have at it. I'd like to be able to see it, but I just can't settle on a spot.

Thanks. I'll post pics when it's done!

literaryquotes

[penguin_dodger]
Women are suited to being the nurses and teachers of our earliest childhood precisely because they themselves are childish, silly and short-sighted, in a word big children, their whole lives long: a kind of intermediate stage between the child and the man, who is the actual human being, 'man'. One only has to watch a girl playing with a child, dancing and singing with it the whole day, and then ask oneself what, with the best will in the world, a man could do in her place.

From 'On The Suffering Of The World' by Arthur Schopenhauer

It's so strange to think that people actually believed this. So strange to think how much our society has changed.

F. Scott Fitzgerald, "The Great Gatsby" [May. 13th, 2008|04:04 pm]

literaryquotes

[mfmcgrory]
There must have been moments even that afternoon when Daisy tumbled short of his dreams — not through her own fault, but because of the colossal vitality of his illusion. It had gone beyond her, beyond everything. He had thrown himself into it with a creative passion, adding to it all the time, decking it out with every bright feather that drifted his way. No amount of fire or freshness can challenge what a man can store up in his ghastly heart.

I'm new here... [May. 13th, 2008|02:17 pm]

literarytattoos

[nowecantrewind]
But the main reason that I'm on here is because I really need to find a font for the tattoo I'm planning... I want it down my ribs, under where my arm would usually cover...
The phrase I am using is from Taming the Beast, by Emily Maguire. I really love the book and I am interested in different languages:
La chair est triste, hélas et j'ai lu tous les livres
I don't think that's the exact translation [[I could remember it in english, so I had to work it out from there] In english, the phrase is: The flesh is sad, alas, and I have read all the books]
So, yes... any suggestions of font? I think that I would like a simple cursive, not something overly flowery, if you get what I mean!
Thanks very much...

The Thirteenth Tale- Diane Setterfield [May. 13th, 2008|04:04 pm]

literaryquotes

[wyvernstars]
Still in my coat and hat, I sank onto the stair to read the letter. (I never read without making sure I am in a secure position. I have been like this ever since the age of seven when, sitting on a high wall and reading The Water Babies, I was so seduced by the descriptions of underwater life that I unconsciously relaxed my muscles. Instead of being held buoyant by the water that so vividly surrounded me in my mind, I plummeted to the ground and knocked myself out. I can still feel the scar under my fringe now. Reading can be dangerous.)

I have made the colossally stupid decision to get a tattoo without having any idea what I want yet. Fortunately, I haven't gotten any ink yet, so I'm not too bad off. Still - some help deciding?
I love the idea of a white ink tattoo because they're so subtle, they look like embossing, and I'm very fair skinned and would apparently take it well. But I'd need something really delicate, I think, and abstract?...
On the other hand - I have always loved the idea of a text tattoo.
I was thinking some illustration from a children's book (I might spend a couple hours looking through the kids section of the bookstore sometime soon) or perhaps the first line of this poem Hamlet writes for Ophelia that I've always loved:
Doubt thou the stars are fire
Doubt that the sun doth move
Doubt truth to be a liar
But never doubt I love

maybe just Doubt The Stars

- on the other hand, should I consider it an ill omen that the stars aren't actually fire, and the sun doesn't actually move? I'm not entirely certain about truth either...

literaryquotes

[newyorkangst]
"When you look up at the sky at night, since I'll be living on one of them, since I'll be laughing on one of them, for you it'll be as if all the stars are laughing. You'll have stars that can laugh! And when you're consoled (everyone eventually is consoled), you'll be glad you've known me. You'll always be my friend. You'll feel like laughing with me. And you'll open your window sometimes just for the fun of it...And your friends will be amazed to see you laughing while you're looking up at the sky. Then you'll tell them, 'Yes, it's the stars; they always make me laugh!' And they'll think you're crazy. It'll be a nasty trick I played on you...And it'll be as if I had given you, instead of stars, a lot of tiny bells that know how to laugh."

Please Stop Laughing at Me by Jodee Blanco [May. 12th, 2008|09:38 pm]

literaryquotes

[the_wondering_1]
[Current Mood | giddy]

A colleague at the University of Chicago had told me that the biggest problem with school bullying is mass denial. She explained that bullies don't realize the pain they're inflicting can cause lasting emotional and psychological scars. Society says "kids will be kids." As a result, the bullies get off the hook, and later don't recall hurting anyone, because in their minds, they were just being normal. Then they hear about a high school shooting, and are as shocked as everyone else that one student would kill another. Kids who are popular may observe bullying, but if it doesn't affect them, they don't pay any attention. Those who are truly aware are the people like me whose school years were hell - everyone thinks we're exaggerating the severity of what happened to us.

"Little, Big" [May. 12th, 2008|06:24 pm]

literaryquotes

[emerald_boa]
"But see?" she said. "It was all meant to be. And I knew it."
"But why?" he said, delighted, in torment; "why are you so sure?"
"Because it's a Tale. And Tales work out."
"But I don't know it's a tale."
"People in tales don't know, always. But there they are."

* * *

"Tell me the Tale," Violet said.
"Ah, if I could, I would."
"Is it too long?"
"Longer than any. Why, child, they'll have put you long beneath the earth, and your children, and your children's children, before that Tale's all told." She shook her head. "That's common knowledge."
"Does it have," Violet asked, "a happy ending?" She'd asked all this before; these weren't questions, but exchanges, as though she and Mrs. Underhill passed back and forth, with compliments, the same gift: each time expressing surprise and gratitude.
"Well, who's to say," Mrs. Underhill said. The scarf grew longer, row by row. "It's a Tale, is all. There are only short ones and long ones. Yours is the longest I know."
